I got back from the memorial . . .
by neat blue dog init was pretty mundane for the most part, same songs, same outline.
the only new thing they added was the video at the end, where stephen lett speaks to the visitors and commends them for coming and recommends they go to jwdotorg and also start a bible study.
they also showed a bar graph with figures increasing every year for jws, memorial attendance and memorial partakers.

They also showed a bar graph with figures increasing every year for JWs, memorial attendance and memorial partakers. He said that since the number of partakers has been steadily rising in recent years, it is proof of God's blessing and the nearness of the end, seeing as these figures can't be sustained for too many years without exceeding 144,000, therefore evidently the end must be close.

I re-read the Bible and saw that their teachings cannot be backed up by it.

Go to memorial tonight and chug the entire cup when it's passed to you
by Bad_Wolf inhas anybody done this?
i'd love to hear the story.
i wonder how they'd scramble to fix that if somebody chugged the whole glass, and even more if was set up with two people to sit in places to get both glasses at the same time.

Being a JW kid is hell
by JRK inin therapy, i was told i should write a letter of grievances to each of my parents.
i really do not have any for my mother, except for things that directly relate to being raised as a jehovah's witness.
upon reflection, my childhood was hell because of the religion and its pernicious corruption of a normal childhood.

I agree it was a living hell. My JW mother was a convert about a decade before I was born, and due to her highly dysfunctional family background, she clung to the troof tighter than ever and dragged me down with her. Recently a member on this board put a call out for hypothetical letters that we'd never actually send to family members, and it felt so good to get all my feelings out even though she'll never read it. (I didn't post it publicly, it was through private message, as the new poster said they were writing a book and looking for submissions in that vein).
Seems we all have mommy issues, JW style ® lol

That's the frustrating part, knowing that you can talk til you're blue in the face, but it will likely only be met by a pair of glazed eyes.

Religion Project
by Darren Doody ini've recently taken a particular interest in the jehovah's witness belief, and as a result, have decided to do a project on this belief as part of my college study.
i am a student teacher in ireland, so, i am undertaking this project from an educational perspective; i want to see how jehovah's witnesses are catered for in religious education in schools, and if there are any ways one could improve it.
i would appreciate if anyone could give their opinion on this topic.

Hi Darren, good to have you. This website is primarily for former Jehovah's Witnesses, but a number of us are active Jehovah's Witnesses as well. This is because the religion practices "disfellowshipping", which means that if we are found out to not agree with some official teachings of the church, an announcement will be made on front of the congregation that we are disfellowshipped, after which all our family and friends will not be allowed to socialize, eat, talk, or even say 'hi' to again, under threat of them being disfellowshipped themselves. That's why those like me have to keep our identities secret to not lose everyone in our life.
In answer to your question, the general concessions given to JW children include but are not limited to:
Being allowed to stand during the pledge of allegiance without participating.
Being excused when a classroom has a birthday celebration.
Allowed to work on something else if everyone else is working on a holiday themed project.
JWs are also strongly discouraged from participating in sports or any and all after school activities, as they are told in their books that non-JW youths are "bad association".
They also are discouraged from getting higher education, and this is enforced because if anyone with a position in the congregation, like an Elder, lets his child go to college he is to be removed from his post.
While many JWs are very kind and mannerly, and may have normal, healthy aspects to their lives, there is no escaping from the high control in every aspect of their lives. You will find things to be roughly the same worldwide, as all policy and rules are set by a group of 8 men in New York, USA called the Governing Body aka the Faithful and Discreet Slave.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Make the Truth Your Own
by neat blue dog inthis is something that hit me just relatively recently.. the phrase "make the truth your own" is a very famous catch phrase in jw culture.
it was a pet philosophy of daniel sydlik and has been used and is used in talks, literature and song.
every witness knows this trope.

When on Earth Jesus loved to PO the Pharisees. He went out of his way to break their traditions. So if he came back today there is no way he would shave before going to the Hall. How would the R&F react thought with these prejudices they have, as shown by the story above, the way a JW was shocked that a person with that appearance could actually be law abiding
